Introduction...As you've probably noticed, there's been a constant onslaught of bots from #makzone and #deva as well a ton of spambots msging people. The alienware guy continues to peddle his garbage in the channel as well. The only thing that they have in common is that they're almost never registered on undernet. The obvious solution to this huge pain in the ass is to require users to be registered and logged in in order to join #edmonton (aka +r). The biggest obstacle is for users to obtain an email address that isn't blocked by cservice. The point of them blocking webmail and such is to keep spammers from just making up a new email address to register on undernet and do as they please. The solution is to either set up an email server or find a free email service out there that isn't blacklisted by undernet. Users can also ask a friend to set them up with an email account on their isp. Shaw provides at least 5 email addresses with their internet package. Telus offers several as well. If you're really stuck, talk to MadCatX, he might be able to get you one. The second step actually getting a registered account and logging in. Here's a carefully drawn out guide to registering and logging in on the Undernet IRC network. UpdateAn alternate solution has been decided upon to eliminate the spam from the #edmonton channel. Since most or all of the spambots are names like Nikki^17 or Jennifer^21, we've decided to put a ban any nick containing the numbers 1 or 2 (credit OCP for this one). There's been no sign of the spambots since the ban was put in place. The plan to require registering to join the channel has been put on hold for now. |
Begin by going to the Undernet New User Registration Page. |
Are you 13 or older? It will ask you if you are 13 or older. Select "I am 13 or older."
Choose a username. This isn't a nick registration like on Dalnet. It's just a username. It may take a few tries to find a username that hasn't been taken. It must be between 2 and 12 letters long.
They want an Email Address. You'll need an email from an actual internet service provider. If your email ends in something like @shaw.ca or @telus.net then you are fine. The registration will not accept Hotmail, Gmail, or Yahoo type webmail accounts. Contact your internet provider's website for instructions on how to set up an email address. Shaw users can get online
help here.

Choose your language.Self explaintory.
Pick a Question and Give an Answer.Select a question and give an answer that you will remember. This is a last resort for verification purposes. I suggest not picking a pet name because pets come and go more than mothers and fathers names and birthdates.
Copy the Code. You'll see a graphic something like this:
Enter the letters and numbers that appear in the picture on the space provided. In this
case, you'd enter DE7FE9C4A8.
Now Submit Your Application. This page just warns you about abusing your account and creating multiple accounts. Just click the submit button.
Start your IRC Client. In this case, we're going to use mIRC since that's the preferred client of new irc users. |
Goto mIRC Options. In mIRC options, find "Connect" in the list to the left and then find "Options" and click on that. You'll see a button called "Perform...". Click on that button and a new window will appear. See the graphic below.
Perform...In the Perform window, put a check beside "Enable perform on connect". Where it says "Network:" click on "Add". A list of networks will appear. Scroll to the bottom of the list of network names and choose "Undernet". Click ok. Below "Perform commands:", enter the following...
Where is says "username", use the usename you created on the New User Registration Page. Where is says pass, use the password you created as well. Finally, click ok. See the example below.
Connect to Undernet. Now you can connect to the undernet irc network and be automatically logged in. You'll be able to join #edmonton and furthermore, nobody will be able to see your personal ip address either.
That's all there is to it.It might seem like a lot of trouble but it only takes five minutes. I wish the email bit was simpler but they made it that way to deter anonymous spambots and such. I hope this guide helped.
