I had the pleasure of attending Edmonton's first "Reclaim the streets" action Aug. 25. A group of "critical mass" cyclists and pedestrians reclaimed 104th Street between 82nd and 83rd Avenues around 7 p.m.
Thithin moments the streets filled with music, dancers, costumes, fresh sod, skipping ropes, and a tremendous amount of positive energy.
Best of all, the automobile traffic had ceased in the new oasis amidst the concrete jungle. It truly had become "People Street" as a home-made street sign declared. What an awesome way to combat air pollution and climate change.
In the same week that melting at the North Pole is reported, I couldn't help but be filled with the hope by the actions of some far sighted Edmontonians.
The participants of the "Reclaim the Streets" party should be proud of what was accomplished.
